While they did not draw the kind of interest their half sister Plum Pretty garnered in November, two of the three half sisters to the 2011 Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) winner sold on the opening day of the Keeneland January horses of all ages sale Jan. 7 in Lexington.
At the Keeneland November breeding stock sale, Mandy Pope of Whisper Hill Farm landed Plum Pretty for $4.2 million. Her half sisters, out of the A.P. Indy mare Liszy, did not generate fireworks at Keeneland January but buyers were excited at their prospects going forward.
Liszy’s newly turned yearling was offered first as Hip No. 74 and was purchased for $17,000 by Frank McEntee of Eagles Nest Farm and Brendan Gallagher of Frankfort Park Stud. The partners plan to offer the chestnut filly at a yearling sale later this year, with a backup plan of racing the daughter from the first crop of Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner Lookin At Lucky .
Immediately after the yearling sold, a Liszy 2-year-old by Ghostzapper was offered as Hip No. 75. She was purchased for $27,000 by Gennadi and Irina Dorochenko’s Raut LLC. Both young fillies were consigned by Mr. and Mrs. Rick Abbott’s Charlton, agent.
Later in the day, another half sibling, 4-year-old broodmare prospect Cayman Style, drew a top bid of $95,000 but failed to reach her reserve as Hip No. 316. Stuart Morris of consignor Dapple Stud, agent, said the Scat Daddy filly could race for owner-trainer Michael Trombetta or could be sold privately. Morris said there seemed to be a lot of interest in the unraced filly.
“Mike Trombetta trained her and owns her and she had a minor injury last summer,” Morris said. “She was going to be coming back to race as a 4-year-old (this year)—she had enough ability and talent. I spoke with him and suggested that keeping her as a broodmare or selling her as a broodmare might be a better plan of action so we put her in here to take a shot and see what happens.”
All three fillies were bred by Silent Indy Stables and DDS Stables. The two older fillies were bred in Pennsylvania while the Lookin At Lucky yearling was bred in Kentucky.
