Smarty Jones , who has been shuttling from Northview Stallion Station in Pennsylvania to Haras Cuatro Piedras in Uruguay since 2011, arrived at the South American farm July 31 to begin his third year as a Southern Hemisphere stallion.
“Smarty arrived yesterday at the farm from quarantine,” Claudia Rosas, who owns Cuatro Piedras with her husband, Pablo Salomone, said Aug. 1. “We were so excited waiting for him. He was really happy, and we are proud to have him here again. In fact, he bred his first mare just a few minutes ago.
“We are very enthusiastic, not only with the colts we have on the farm, but also because of the many winners he’s been siring recently in different countries. Next May we are going to be selling his first crop in Uruguay, and we are sure it will be a rousing success.”
Since April, Smarty Jones has sired stakes winners in the U.S., Canada, and Singapore. His filly Better Life, 2012 champion miler and stayer in Singapore, captured the Queen Elizabeth II Cup (Sin-II) before closing out her career with another victory over colts in the $912,000 Emirates Singapore Derby (Sin-I). Last year, the Australian-bred filly defeated Singapore’s eventual Horse of the Year Super Easy in the Kranji Mile (Sin-I), and then took the Longines Singapore Gold Cup (Sin-I).
Smarty’s biggest success in the U.S. came in June with Centralinteligence, who scored in the Triple Bend Handicap (gr. I) at Betfair Hollywood Park. Earlier in the year, his son Concealed Identity won the John B. Campbell Handicap at Laurel Park, and another son, stakes-winning Res Judicata, finished second in the Fit to Fight Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack. Smarty Jones’ other stakes winners this year are Sommeiler Smarty and Smarty B.
On July 28, Smarty’s 4-year-old daughter Nikkis Smartypants won the Royal North Stakes (Can-IIIT) at Woodbine for her fourth victory in six career starts.
