Idolo Porteno seized the lead in mid-stretch and pulled away to a stylish victory in Argentina’s most prestigious race, the G1 Gran Premio Internacional Carlos Pellegrini at Hipodromo de San Isidro Saturday.
Defending champion Soy Carambolo was second. Final time for the 2400 meters (about twelve furlongs) was 2:28.11.
Before winning the Carlos Pellegrini, Idolo Porteno was the winner of the G1 Gran Premio Dardo Rocha on Nov. 19. He was ridden to victory by Jorge Ricardo, who for years has knocked heads with Russell Baze as the world’s leading jockey by wins. It was the third victory in the race for Ricardo, who also won in 1994 and 2003.
Idolo Porteno is a son of Jump Start, who stood at Overbrook Farm before relocating in 2011 to Northview Stallion Station in Pennsylvania, and is out of the Argentinian-bred mare Idealidad (Roy).
