Pennsylvania-based young stallion Mad Flatter was euthanized following a stall accident, reports bloodhorse.com. The multiple Gr. 3 winner “was just feeling good,” according to part owner Kim Heath of Bonnie Heath Farm, and every effort was made to save him.
A son of Flatter, Mad Flatter won eight of his 28 starts on the track for a total of $354,843 in earnings. Two of his wins came in the Gr. 3 Spend A Buck Handicap at Calder in back-to-back years, and he was placed in several other graded stakes. A participant in the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Mile, the front-runner was knocked out at the start to lose all chance.
The 11-year-old entered stud in 2013, and his first 2-year-olds are showing early signs of promise. At the recent Ocala Breeders’ Sale, a son named Sunday Soldier breezed three furlongs in :33 2/5, co-fastest time at the distance, later selling for $75,000 from a $2,500 stud fee.
“It is with great sorrow that we share the loss of our stallion Mad Flatter,” said part owner Glenn Brok of Diamond B Farm. “It is tragic, to lose a graded front-end running miler with his pedigree, by Flatter and the strong influence of the prolific family of Weekend Surprise. To come this far and for him to go too soon, is a terrible loss; a loss for our family, the Heaths, and all his breeders, supporters, and fans.”
